Golf Breaks in Lisbon
Lisbon punches well above its weight as a golf destination. Within an hour of the city you’ll find links-style layouts, parkland classics and resort tracks that regularly feature on best-in-Europe lists. Add in Atlantic breezes, affordable prices and one of the continent’s most vibrant capitals, and the appeal becomes obvious pretty quickly.
What really sets a Lisbon golf break apart is the sheer variety packed into a relatively compact region. The Lisbon Coast, stretching down through Estoril and Cascais towards Setubal, offers everything from clifftop layouts with Atlantic panoramas to mature wooded courses that feel a world away from the city. Then there’s the Arrábida Natural Park to the south, where the scenery is genuinely jaw-dropping. To the north, Sintra and its surrounding hills add a cooler, more dramatic backdrop for those who want something a little different.
Accommodation ranges from five-star resort hotels with full spa and leisure facilities to boutique guesthouses in the historic Alfama district, giving travellers the choice of a pure golf resort experience or a city-break-with-golf hybrid that Lisbon handles particularly well. Pairs, groups and societies all find something to suit them here.

Best Golf Holiday Destinations in Lisbon
The Lisbon golf region isn’t a single spot but a collection of distinct areas, each with its own personality and appeal. Coastal resorts around Cascais and Estoril suit those who want a combination of elegant surroundings, beach access and solid golf. The Setubal Peninsula, anchored by the Troia Golf complex and the stunning Quinta do Perú, attracts serious golfers looking for longer, more challenging layouts in scenery that borders on the extraordinary. For travellers who want full city immersion alongside their golf, staying in central Lisbon and travelling out to play makes perfect sense, especially with a hire car. Groups with varying interests tend to find the city base option particularly flexible and good value.
Beyond the fairways, Lisbon rewards curiosity. The city itself is one of Europe’s oldest capitals, layered with Moorish architecture, grand squares and a waterfront that comes alive in the evenings. The food culture is exceptional. Fresh Atlantic seafood, slow-cooked bacalhau, pastéis de nata straight from the oven at Pastéis de Belém. You eat very well in Lisbon without having to try particularly hard or spend a great deal.
The climate plays its part too. The Lisbon coast benefits from Atlantic influence, which keeps temperatures comfortable through summer and pleasantly mild through the cooler months. Spring and autumn light here has a particular quality that photographers and golfers both appreciate.
Portugal
Portugal is one of Europe’s most reliable golf destinations, offering a wide choice of high-quality courses across regions like the Algarve, Lisbon Coast and Porto. Golf here is consistent and accessible, with well-designed layouts, strong infrastructure and year-round playability. Off the course, Portugal delivers great food, coastal scenery and a relaxed pace, making it ideal for golfers looking for value, variety and dependable sunshine golf.

Algarve
The Algarve sits on Portugal’s south coast and is one of Europe’s best-known golf regions. It’s a firm favourite for good reason, a huge choice of courses, high standards and resorts that really get golf travellers. Off the course, you’ll find golden beaches, traditional towns, brilliant seafood and a laid back holiday feel that makes it so easy to switch off.

Cascais
Cascais is a refined Atlantic golf destination just west of Lisbon, offering a strong cluster of championship courses set among pine forests, dunes and coastal cliffs. Golf here is varied and well conditioned, with layouts that reward strategy and cope well with ocean breezes. Off the course, Cascais delivers beaches, seafood restaurants and an easygoing seaside atmosphere, making it ideal for golfers who want quality golf with a relaxed coastal base close to the capital.

Madeira
Madeira sits out in the Atlantic and delivers one of Europe’s most scenic golf getaways. It’s a smaller island destination, but the golf feels special—dramatic elevation changes, sweeping ocean views, and a relaxed pace that suits a proper break. You’ve got two standout courses to build a trip around, plus Funchal’s restaurants, fresh seafood, and mountain scenery for the days you’re not playing.

This Robert Trent Jones Sr. course is famous for its par-3 3rd hole, which plays over a ravine with the Atlantic crashing below. It is a scenic, flatter course that is very walkable and enjoyable for all levels. The best place to stay is the Onyria Quinta da Marinha Hotel, which recently underwent a full renovation and offers a fantastic “stay and play” environment right in the posh heart of Cascais.
Best time to play golf in Lisbon
Portugal’s capital enjoys around 290 days of sunshine per year, which gives it one of the most reliable climates for golf anywhere in Europe. That said, each season has its own character worth knowing about. Spring, from March through May, is arguably the finest time to visit. Temperatures sit comfortably between 16 and 22 degrees, the courses are in excellent condition after winter rains and the city feels fresh and unhurried. Autumn, particularly September and October, offers very similar conditions with the added bonus of warm sea temperatures if anyone fancies a swim.
Rain falls mostly between November and February, though sustained bad weather is fairly rare.

The region has several standout venues. Troia Golf, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, is widely regarded as one of Portugal’s finest courses and sits on a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic and the Sado estuary, which makes for an extraordinary setting. Penha Longa, set within a historic estate in the hills above Sintra, is another course that regularly features in European top-100 lists.
Lisbon has excellent air connections from across the UK. TAP Air Portugal, easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways all operate direct services, with flights available from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and Belfast among others. Flight times are typically around two hours twenty minutes to two hours forty from most UK departure points.
It depends on what you’re looking for. The Algarve has more courses and more dedicated golf resort infrastructure. Lisbon, though, offers something the Algarve can’t quite match, which is the combination of a major world city with excellent golf right on the doorstep. The courses around Lisbon tend to be quieter and more affordable than those in the south, and the overall travel experience feels richer for golfers who also want culture, great restaurants and a proper city to explore.
The honest answer is that it combines things other golf destinations do separately. You get genuinely good courses, several of them outstanding, alongside a capital city with real cultural depth, exceptional food and a nightlife scene that won’t disappoint. The Atlantic coastline around Cascais and Guincho is dramatic and beautiful. Sintra is one of the most visited heritage sites in southern Europe for good reason.
Golf Holiday Facts
Portugal welcomes over 2.5 million golf tourists annually, with the Lisbon region accounting for a growing share of that figure.
Golf tourism contributes an estimated 450 million euros per year to the Portuguese economy, and the Lisbon coast has seen consistent investment in course upgrades and new resort facilities over the past decade. The region now draws visitors from across northern Europe, with UK, German and Scandinavian travellers making up the largest share of international golf visitors to the area.(1)
Lisbon airport handles over 34 million passengers per year, making it one of Europe's most connected entry points for golf travellers.
The sheer volume of direct routes into Lisbon from UK and European airports means the region is accessible to a far wider range of travellers than many comparable golf destinations. (2)
The Lisbon coastline stretches for over 150 kilometres and is home to more than 20 golf courses within a 90-minute drive of the city centre.
This density of quality courses within a compact geographic area is one of the Lisbon region’s strongest selling points for golf holiday planners. Unlike some European golf destinations where courses are spread across large distances, the Lisbon area allows golfers to play four or five different venues over a five-night break without excessive travel time between rounds.(3)
