Not many hotels can boast a ten-million-year-old rainforest on their doorstep, a totally unique setting that The Datai - an idyllic natural retreat on the northwest tip of Langkawi - makes the most of.

Blending seamlessly into the surroundings, its freestanding, Malay-style villas - many featuring an elevated veranda and a private pool - are scattered throughout the forest for total privacy. Pool Suites are located in the rainforest too, near to the beach, with two guest suites sharing a living and dining area, linked by a covered walkway and having access to a private swimming pool. There's a lovely spa, whose four suites are located deep in the rainforest canopy, and around the peaceful main swimming pool, only the buzz of the jungle's indigenous animals breaks the silence. In addition, there are a number of activities to enjoy, including guided rainforest walks, mountain-biking and cookery courses and, for those who enjoy playing golf, The Els Club Teluk Datai is a splendid course designed by four-times major winner, Ernie Els.

A natural paradise, Langkawi boasts magnificent limestone formations, mysterious caves, mesmerising waterfalls and a captivating labyrinth of secret mangrove water channels. Take a ride on the steepest cable-car in Southeast Asia and prepare to be captivated by the spectacular view of Seven Wells Waterfall from the 550-million-year-old mountain range, Machinchang. Visit the island's oldest geological formation, Gunung Mat Chinchang - the first part of Southeast Asia to rise from the seabed during the Cambrian period half a billion years ago- or discover Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and its mangrove forest, full of fascinating wildlife.

The Datai Spa features individual spa pavilions nestled in the jungle, beside a stream. Open on three sides and sheltered by the forest canopy, each pavilion affords privacy and peace in which to enjoy therapies. The host of exotic spa treatments combines the spirit and traditions of Bali with the mysticism of Langkawi's ancient rainforests and includes the signature Spa Massage, which is an extraordinary fusion of Shiatsu, Swedish, Thai, Balinese and Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi techniques, applied by two Therapists working in perfect harmony.

Golf

The Ernie Els-designed, Els Club Teluk Datai is an award-winning, 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course, enjoying an incredible setting amidst tropical rainforest and stretching to the edge of the Andaman Sea. In keeping with the setting, bunkers are replaced by patches of tropical vegetation and streams, whilst holes are named after native flora and fauna, and include Dusky Leaf and Hornbill. In this ancient jungle retreat, you can expect the comforts of an international-class golf club - including state-of-the-art buggies fitted with GPS, a Clubhouse with modern locker rooms, a pro shop, refreshments facilities, and opportunities to take professional golf lessons. The course, located a mere five-minute drive from the hotel, has been honoured to receive 'The World's Best New Golf Course' award at the 2014 World Golf Awards.

Accompanied only by your dedicated waiter for the evening, complete intimacy is guaranteed.

Weddings

The Datai boasts a gorgeous location in which to enjoy a romantic wedding for you and your guests. Choose from a divine beach setting, with the emerald-green sea and far-distant islands as your backdrop, or venture into the heart of the ancient rainforest to enjoy a traditional Malay (Bersanding) ceremony at The Gulai House, a traditional Kampung dwelling.

The hotel would be happy to tailor your wedding to your requirements and the dedicated Wedding Specialist will ensure that your wishes come true, whether you dream of a traditional Malay ceremony or a more modern version - traditional music, fireworks, delicious cuisine and flower arrangements are just some of the details that can be organised, just for you.

Due to its unique position, built into surrounding ancient rainforest, The Datai is home to a wealth of wild animals and intriguing creatures. It's not unusual to find a wild pig sauntering past your door or the odd monkey tapping at the window. The Datai seamlessly blends into the natural environment, so the frogs and the lizards do as they wish, the monkeys make humorous fools of themselves and the insects carry on regardless. Expect to hear bird calls and monkey chatter throughout your stay, because this is a truly wild experience.

The hotel's traditional Malaysian junk schooner, Naga Pelangi, and its crew, are available for a variety of sailing excursions. The 'Discovery Tour' sails to Teluk Dalo Dang and offers the opportunity to enjoy a swim in the sea before cruising the Selat Chinchin, the channel between Langkawi and Koh Tarutao. Or, take the 'Day Cruise' to the pretty island of Tarutao, a National Marine Park of Thailand where you will have the opportunity to go sea kayaking or swimming. On the return to Datai Bay you will also have the chance to learn how to handle the Chinese sail of the schooner and even try your hand at working the ropes and lines yourself. If you prefer, enjoy a leisurely evening, nibbling on canapés and sipping Champagne on the 'Sunset Cocktail Cruise' as you sail around Datai Bay and enjoy watching the sun set over Teluk Datai. Naga Pelangi is also available for private charter and an itinerary can be tailor-made to suit your interests.
